UK Launches £750K Fund to Help Young Talent Become Pilots and Engineers
Aiming to open the skies to a new generation of talent, the UK government is launching fresh support to help young people—particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds—enter careers in aviation.
With a strong focus on diversity, inclusion, and opportunity, the initiative is set to ignite ambition, unlock potential, and build the future workforce of the aviation industry.
New Round of ‘Reach for the Sky’ Fund Launched
On 20 June 2025, the UK government announced a new £750,000 boost through the Reach for the Sky Challenge Fund.
The fund, now in its fourth round, is designed to support outreach and education programmes that inspire disadvantaged young people, including those from ethnic minority communities, to pursue careers as pilots, engineers, and other aviation professionals.
The funding is open to organisations across the UK, which can apply to run activities such as:
- Aviation career events
- Mentorship and training programmes
- Interactive STEM workshops and demonstrations
- Educational partnerships with schools and universities
Since its inception, the fund has delivered £2.5 million to 40 organisations and has already reached over 100,000 young people—introducing them to a world they may have never imagined joining.
Tackling Barriers to Entry
The initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to secure the long-term future of UK aviation by developing a skilled and diverse workforce. The fund specifically targets the key barriers that often prevent young people from entering the aviation sector, such as:
- Lack of exposure to aviation careers
- Limited access to technical education or role models
- Financial and social challenges
By supporting grassroots outreach, the fund aims to level the playing field and help more young people see aviation as a viable, exciting career path.
Aviation Minister Launches New Fund
To mark the launch, Aviation Minister Mike Kane visited a Liverpool youth centre where one of the current fund recipients—The King’s Trust—was hosting an aviation careers workshop. Young people aged 16 to 30 engaged directly with aviation professionals, learned about local job opportunities, and took part in employability workshops designed to build practical, job-ready skills.
Minister Kane emphasized the importance of opening doors to all communities, stating that this fund is not just about jobs—it’s about changing lives and building an inclusive future for aviation.
How to Apply
Applications for the latest round of the Reach for the Sky Challenge Fund are open until 12 September 2025. Eligible organisations are encouraged to propose impactful, inclusive aviation outreach programmes.
Applications will be reviewed by a joint panel from the Department for Transport (DfT) and the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), which manages the fund on behalf of the DfT.
Conclusion
With this latest investment, the UK government is taking meaningful steps to inspire the next generation of pilots, engineers, and aviation leaders. By breaking down social and economic barriers, the Reach for the Sky Challenge Fund aims to give every young person a chance to take flight—regardless of their background.
