China Delivers Z-10ME Attack Helicopters to Pakistan

Pakistan’s skies are about to thunder with a new roar. After decades of relying on its aging fleet of American AH-1F Cobras, Pakistan is finally moving forward—with cutting-edge, combat-ready Chinese Z-10ME attack helicopters.

The delivery marks a major upgrade in Pakistan Army Aviation’s firepower, maneuverability, and high-altitude warfare capability, further cementing the growing defense partnership between Islamabad and Beijing.

Pakistan Receives Z-10ME Attack Helicopters from China

Pakistan has begun receiving the Z-10ME, an advanced variant of China’s Z-10 attack helicopter, to replace its aging AH-1F Cobra fleet, which has served the Pakistan Army Aviation Corps for over 40 years.

While no official announcement has been made by either government, multiple videos of Z-10ME helicopters bearing Pakistani military markings have surfaced on platforms such as Weibo, strongly confirming the development.

The Z-10, originally designed for the People’s Liberation Army Ground Force, is a twin-turboshaft, medium-weight attack helicopter built primarily for anti-tank warfare, but also features secondary air-to-air capabilities. Its modular design supports various weapons configurations and advanced avionics, making it a versatile battlefield asset.

The Z-10ME variant acquired by Pakistan represents a significant leap in performance and survivability. At the heart of the upgrade is the WZ-9G engine, delivering 1,500 kW of power, more than 30% greater than the original model. This enables better lift capacity, weapons payload, and operational performance in high-altitude and high-temperature environments, making it ideal for challenging terrains like the Hindu Kush and Siachen Glacier.

Several physical and functional upgrades distinguish the Z-10ME/P variant now in Pakistan’s hands:

  • IR Signature Reduction: Engine exhausts are repositioned upward, reducing infrared heat signature by 63%, enhancing survivability against IR-guided MANPADS.
  • Desert Ops Ready: A centrifugal sand-filtered intake enables operations in dusty environments such as Pakistan’s border regions and deserts.
  • Expanded Armament: The helicopter now boasts six weapon hardpoints (up from four), capable of carrying:
    • 16 CM-502KG fire-and-forget missiles with 25 km range
    • TY-90 air-to-air missiles for helicopter dogfighting
    • GR5 guided rockets with <2-meter accuracy and 18-meter kill radius
    • CM-501XA loitering munitions and SW-6 drones for standoff strikes and recon missions
  • Gun Upgrade: The older 23 mm gun is replaced with a 30 mm chain gun, tripling ammo capacity and significantly enhancing close air support.

The avionics and cockpit design feature helmet-mounted sights (HMS) and modular display systems. Two avionics setups—one rumored to be French-based and the other domestically developed by China—include advanced holographic heads-up displays for superior battlefield awareness.

Pakistan’s interest in the Z-10ME reignited following its showcase at African and Southeast Asian defense exhibitions in 2024. With rising regional tensions and the growing need for modern battlefield tools, the Z-10ME’s cost-effectiveness and high-altitude capabilities made it a strategic fit.

Recent footage even shows Pakistani Z-10MEs armed with CM-series guided munitions, indicating the aircraft are not just for show—they’re fully equipped and combat-ready, capable of standoff engagements outside enemy missile range.
