Airbus Creates 1,000 Jobs With Second U.S. A320 Assembly Line
Airbus is ramping up its production game in the U.S., signaling a major expansion in the Gulf Coast aerospace hub.
With global demand for aircraft surging and backlogs stretching delivery schedules, the European aviation giant is doubling down on its commitment to North America by adding a second final assembly line for the A320 family in Mobile, Alabama.
Expanding the Mobile Footprint
The new A320 assembly line, expected to be operational by mid-2025, comes on top of Airbus’ existing Mobile facility, which currently assembles A220s and a single A320 line.
This addition will accelerate delivery of narrowbody jets, reduce delays, and help Airbus meet growing market demand. By boosting throughput, the expansion supports Airbus’ long-term goal of increasing total global delivery rates.
Economic Impact and Job Growth
Beyond production gains, the Mobile expansion brings significant employment opportunities. Airbus estimates the new line will create around 1,000 jobs, providing a substantial boost to the Gulf Coast region.
The move also aligns with strategic objectives to shorten supply chains and lower logistical costs for North American customers, strengthening Airbus’ competitive position against rival narrowbody manufacturers.
Supporting Infrastructure and Long-Term Vision
Airbus isn’t stopping at the assembly line. The Mobile facility is also receiving new A320neo hangar bays, a gauging hangar for the A320neo, an A220 quad-bay hangar, and an extension of the Delivery Center. Construction of these support structures will continue beyond 2025, ensuring the facility remains a state-of-the-art hub for Airbus production.
A Decade of Growth in Mobile
Airbus launched its Mobile, Alabama site a decade ago with a single A320-family assembly line. Since then, the facility has steadily grown its capabilities. By 2026, Airbus aims to produce 14 A220s per month across Mobile and Mirabel, despite past challenges that limited deliveries to 75 A220s in 2024 and 17 in Q1 2025 due to lingering supply chain disruptions.
Next-Generation Freighter Ambitions
As global air cargo demand rises, Airbus is also moving forward in the freighter market. The A350 Freighter (A350F), a modern widebody cargo aircraft, has entered the assembly stage. The first fully equipped aft section was recently rolled out from the Hamburg hangar, marking a key milestone in the program.
Final Assembly in Toulouse
Final assembly of the A350F is underway at Airbus’ Toulouse facility, with fuselage and wing deliveries progressing across Germany and France. In August, Airbus Atlantic’s Montoir-de-Bretagne site delivered the forward and central fuselage sections for the A350 family, reinforcing Airbus’ coordinated production network across Europe.
With these initiatives, Airbus is positioning itself to meet the growing demand for both passenger and cargo aircraft, while solidifying its U.S. manufacturing presence and creating economic benefits in the Gulf Coast region.
