AirAsia in Talks for New Jets with Airbus, COMAC, and Embraer

AirAsia, Southeast Asia’s largest budget airline, is gearing up for a transformative chapter in its history.

Known for revolutionizing low-cost air travel in the region, the airline is now planning an ambitious fleet expansion that could redefine its operational strategy and global footprint.

With discussions underway with major aircraft manufacturers like Airbus, COMAC, and Embraer, AirAsia is setting the stage for a bold leap into the future of aviation.

The announcement was made during the AirAsia MOVE Christmas Celebration at KLIA Terminal 2, where Group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes shared insights into the airline’s plans to acquire up to 100 regional jets.

This marks a significant departure from AirAsia’s longstanding identity as an Airbus-exclusive operator. “We need more planes; that’s very clear,” said Fernandes. “My team is heading to Brazil to assess Embraer aircraft, some will visit Canada for the Airbus A220, and we’re also in talks with COMAC in China.”

Currently, AirAsia’s fleet is dominated by Airbus A321s, which serve as the airline’s backbone. However, the planned expansion signals a diversification in strategy, with a focus on smaller, versatile aircraft to supplement its existing models.

While the final number of new planes awaits board approval, Fernandes indicated that the minimum requirement stands at 100 aircraft, with the potential for even more.

This fleet growth aligns with AirAsia’s recent merger with AirAsia X, a move that has consolidated both airlines under one corporate structure.

The merger has unlocked new opportunities for expansion, as the combined entity aims to carry 90 million passengers by 2025, up from its current 70 million. Transit passengers now make up 21% of AirAsia’s total traffic, solidifying its role as a regional hub on par with global centers like Dubai and London.

Beyond Southeast Asia, AirAsia’s expansion plans include launching flights to new destinations in Africa, Europe, and the U.S. Starting in 2024, the airline will debut routes to Kazakhstan and Kenya, marking its entry into these key markets.

These developments underline AirAsia’s ambition to transform into a global aviation powerhouse, connecting diverse corners of the world through affordable and efficient air travel.

With a bold vision for growth, innovative fleet upgrades, and an eye on global expansion, AirAsia is poised to remain a leader in the low-cost carrier segment while setting new benchmarks in connectivity and service.
