Airbus Showcases New H140 Light Twin Helicopter at VERTICON 2025

Airbus Helicopters has introduced its newest innovation, the H140, at the VERTICON vertical lift industry show in Dallas, Texas.

This state-of-the-art light twin-engine rotorcraft redefines the 3-tonne helicopter class, delivering unmatched performance, cost efficiency, and passenger comfort.

The H140 helicopter, a 3-metric-ton-class aircraft, is set to enter service in 2028, initially supporting emergency medical services (EMS) with its advanced capabilities. Designed for EMS, passenger transport, and private and business aviation, the H140 builds on the H135’s success, according to the world’s largest civil helicopter manufacturer.

Key Features of the H140 Helicopter

At VERTICON, Airbus showcased a full-scale EMS-configured model of the H140, emphasizing its groundbreaking design. The helicopter boasts a T-shaped tail boom with an optimized Fenestron, significantly reducing noise levels. It also features a five-blade bearingless main rotor and new, more powerful engines, enhancing both efficiency and safety.

The Airbus H140 is a versatile multi-mission helicopter designed to accommodate two pilots and up to six passengers. It falls under the 3-tonne maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) class, offering a balance of performance and efficiency. The helicopter has a length of 13.30 meters, a height of 3.89 meters, and a width of 2.25 meters, making it compact yet spacious for various operational needs. Its main rotor spans 10.80 meters in diameter, contributing to smooth and stable flight characteristics.

Spacious and Versatile Cabin Design

The H140’s cabin is engineered for maximum accessibility and flexibility, making it ideal for a variety of missions. Key highlights include:

  • Large windows for exceptional visibility.
  • comfortable cabin layout accommodating up to six passengers.
  • Clamshell rear doors and a high tail boom for seamless loading of stretcher systems, including intensive care units and transport incubators.
  • Sliding doors for quick and efficient entry and exit, crucial for time-sensitive EMS operations.

Power and Performance

Powered by twin Safran Arrius 2E engines, each delivering 700 shaft horsepower (shp), the H140 offers the best payload and range in its class. Its dual-channel full-authority digital engine control (FADEC) system ensures optimal performance during normal operations and provides substantial power reserves in one-engine-inoperative (OEI) scenarios, enhancing safety and reliability.

Advanced Rotor System and Maintenance Efficiency

The H140 incorporates the same five-bladed rotor system introduced on the H145 in 2019. This bearingless main rotor design reduces maintenance needs, improves reliability, and delivers a smoother flight experience.

Cutting-Edge Avionics and Safety Features

The H140 will be equipped with the Helionix avionics suite, already proven in models like the H135, H145, H160, and H175. Combined with a 4-axis autopilot, Helionix enhances situational awareness, reduces pilot workload, and boosts overall flight safety.

Prototype Development and Testing

Airbus is developing four dedicated H140 prototypes, with the first aircraft already undergoing flight tests at its Donauwörth facility. This rigorous testing ensures the helicopter meets the highest standards of performance and safety before its 2028 debut.
