ANA Introduces Fire-Resistant Bag to Prevent Battery Fires Mid-Flight

All Nippon Airways (ANA), in collaboration with Kikuchi Sheet Industries and TOPPAN Corporation, has introduced a fire-resistant electronics storage bag designed to enhance onboard safety.
This innovative solution aims to protect passengers, crew, and aircraft from potential fires caused by overheated batteries in electronic devices, a growing concern in modern air travel.
The storage bag combines two advanced technologies. TOPPAN’s FSfilm® releases a fire-extinguishing aerosol when exposed to high heat, providing rapid suppression of fires.

This is paired with Kikuchi’s fire-resistant bag, which is constructed from JIS A 1323 Class A-approved felt and an aluminum-coated heat-resistant sheet.
Together, these components create a lightweight and compact bag capable of containing and neutralizing electronic devices that show signs of abnormal heat or deformation.
Currently, these fire-resistant bags are already in use across ANA’s fleet, including AirJapan and ANA Wings. The development of this solution was prompted by feedback from ANA cabin attendants, who highlighted the need for safer storage options following incidents on other airlines involving lithium-ion battery fires.

Their input played a crucial role in the planning and creation of this safety innovation. To further promote fire safety across the aviation industry, ANA will begin offering the bags for purchase through ANA Trading starting in January 2025. Competing airlines and commercial customers will have the opportunity to integrate this safety measure into their own operations.
