Hainan Airlines Reshapes Fleet: Retires 787-8s, Expands with New Jets
Hainan Airlines is making strategic changes to optimize its fleet and enhance operational efficiency. As part of its restructuring efforts, the airline plans to sell nine Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners, shifting focus toward larger, more cost-effective aircraft.
This move aligns with an industry-wide trend where airlines are phasing out smaller wide-body jets in favor of models with better fuel efficiency and per-seat economics.
Streamlining Operations with Boeing 787-8 Sale
According to Zhitong Finance, the sale of these Dreamliners will be conducted through a competitive bidding process, with potential buyers yet to be disclosed.
This decision is expected to influence the secondary market for used Boeing 787s and could impact global aircraft valuations.
Currently, the Boeing 787-8 accounts for less than 3% of Hainan Airlines’ total fleet. In contrast, the airline operates 28 of the larger Boeing 787-9, which offers improved range and fuel efficiency—ideal for long-haul routes. By phasing out the smaller Dreamliners, Hainan Airlines aims to:
- Reduce operating costs
- Optimize fleet utilization
- Improve overall profitability
Expanding Global Reach Despite Fleet Reduction
Despite the fleet adjustment, Hainan Airlines remains committed to expanding its international network. The airline continues to launch new long-haul routes, strengthening connectivity between China and major global markets.
Additionally, Beijing Capital Airlines, a subsidiary of HNA Group, is expanding its own international footprint, supporting the parent company’s broader global strategy.
Strengthening Domestic Network with COMAC ARJ21-700
While focusing on long-haul efficiency, Hainan Airlines is also investing in its domestic expansion. In early 2024, the airline announced a major acquisition of 40 COMAC ARJ21-700 regional jets in a deal valued at $1.52 billion. This strategic investment aims to:
- Boost regional connectivity across China
- Reduce reliance on foreign aircraft by incorporating locally manufactured jets
- Support China’s aviation industry and its growing domestic travel demand
