On Tuesday morning, at least two environmental activists from the direct action group Just Stop Oil were arrested following a protest at Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5.

The activists, identified as 22-year-old Phoebe Plummer and 58-year-old Jane Touil, created a significant disruption by spraying orange paint on departure boards, windows, and the floor of the terminal.

The protest began around 8:35 am when Plummer and Touil entered Terminal 5, both wearing white T-shirts marked with the Just Stop Oil logo and carrying modified fire extinguishers filled with paint.

Their actions were intended to draw attention to their demand for a global commitment to end the use of oil, gas, and coal by 2030. Before her arrest, Plummer expressed defiance, stating, “People around the world are rising up to demand an end to oil by 2030.

This is an international problem, so ordinary people are doing what our politicians will not.” Despite the protestors’ use of special ‘lock on’ devices designed to make their removal difficult, they were ultimately subdued as passengers walked over them to access their departure gates.

Gatwick Airport reported that the protest had no effect on its operations. In response to the incident, the Metropolitan Police confirmed that the activists were arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage. The police are currently on high alert for any further protest actions that may occur.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police stated that the situation at Heathrow is being monitored closely and assured that appropriate measures are in place to address any additional disruptions caused by similar protests.
