How to Use Overhead Bins: United Airlines Helps Passengers Adjust

United Airlines has introduced a new initiative to make air travel smoother by teaching passengers how to properly use overhead bins.
The move coincides with the airline’s rollout of larger overhead bins on its E175 aircraft, which they estimate will eliminate the need for approximately one million annual passengers to gate-check bags.
This upgrade, available on more than 150,000 E175 flights, increases storage capacity by 80%, allowing for an additional 29 carry-on bags per flight.
The airline isn’t stopping at just adding bigger bins; they’re actively educating travelers on how to maximize the available space. A Reddit user recently shared a video showing the airline’s instructional efforts, which include demonstrating the best way to position bags for efficient storage.
These tips are part of United’s messaging for flights equipped with their new ‘United NEXT’ interior, featuring the enhanced bins.
One interesting feature of the newer bins is their assist mechanism. Unlike traditional bins that are pushed straight up, these can be pulled down and then lifted back into place with less effort.
While this innovation is helpful, there have been occasional reports of the mechanism breaking, which highlights the need for proper use and care.
United’s efforts to educate passengers aim to make boarding faster and reduce the hassle of finding space for carry-ons. With a growing number of planes now featuring these upgrades, travelers are likely to notice these helpful instructions more often, ensuring a better experience for everyone onboard.
