Iran Showcases Indigenously-Developed Light Transport Aircraft

Iran has reached a major milestone in its aviation journey by unveiling the Simorgh, a domestically developed light transport aircraft. The announcement took place at the 12th International Aerospace Exhibition on Kish Island, held from December 10 to 13.
This event not only highlighted the launch of the Simorgh but also showcased Iran’s growing self-reliance in defense and aerospace technology, despite challenges such as international sanctions.
Introducing the Simorgh
The Simorgh, named after the mythical Phoenix, is a twin-engine transport aircraft designed by the Iran Aircraft Manufacturing Industrial Company (HESA). While based on the Antonov An-140, it includes key upgrades such as a rear cargo ramp, making it suitable for a variety of uses in both military and civilian settings.
Key Features
- Range: 3,900 kilometers
- Top Speed: 533 km/h
- Capabilities:
- Transporting standard 463L pallets and light vehicles
- Evacuating injured personnel
- Supporting paratrooper missions
Built to meet international safety standards, the Simorgh has proven its reliability. It underwent rigorous testing, including a successful maiden flight in May 2023, before making its official debut at the exhibition.
A Boost for Iran’s Defense and Aerospace
The launch of the Simorgh is part of Iran’s broader push to enhance its defense capabilities. Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh, the country’s Defense Minister, emphasized that Iran’s aerospace industry has become self-reliant. He credited Western sanctions for strengthening Iran’s determination to innovate and achieve technological independence.
Why the Simorgh Matters
The Simorgh is set to play a crucial role in Iran’s military and logistical operations. Its versatility makes it ideal for a range of tasks, including:
- Transporting troops and cargo
- Conducting medical evacuations
- Supporting humanitarian and paratrooper missions
Looking Ahead
The unveiling of the Simorgh marks a significant achievement for Iran’s aviation industry. With its advanced design and broad capabilities, the aircraft represents a step forward in the country’s ability to develop modern defense and aerospace technologies.
