Japan Airlines Retires Iconic Boeing 777-300ER Fleet, Welcomes Airbus A350-1000

Airlines around the globe are focused on enhancing customer satisfaction by upgrading their fleets. However, this modernization often comes with the bittersweet retirement of iconic older aircraft.
As airlines introduce cutting-edge models like the Boeing 777X and Airbus A350, many long-serving planes are being phased out.
Japan Airlines (JAL) has begun retiring its Boeing 777-300ER fleet, marking the end of an era for the airline. The first of these retirements took place on September 19, 2024, creating an emotional moment for staff and aviation enthusiasts alike.
A Heartfelt Farewell
Video footage from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport (HND) showed ground staff lining the runway to bid a touching farewell to the retiring aircraft as it headed into storage. Delivered to JAL in 2005, this particular aircraft, registered as JA734J, was the fourth Boeing 777-300ER to join the Japanese flag carrier’s fleet. After its retirement, the registration was updated to N3243P.
The aircraft completed its final revenue flight on August 20, 2024, flying between Sydney (SYD), Australia, and Tokyo Haneda (HND), after more than 19 years of faithful service.
Transition to a Modern Fleet
Japan Airlines previously operated a fleet of 13 Boeing 777-300ERs. These will be gradually replaced by the state-of-the-art Airbus A350-1000s.
The first of these new aircraft, featuring luxurious interiors and JAL’s redesigned first-class suites, was delivered in December 2023.
The transition to the Airbus A350-1000 represents a new chapter for Japan Airlines, combining modern technology, superior passenger comfort, and increased fuel efficiency.
By 2026, JAL is expected to fully replace its retired Boeing 777-300ERs with the 13 new A350-1000s.
