SpiceJet Faces Check-In Denials, Flies Empty from Dubai

SpiceJet, the cash-strapped Indian budget airline, recently faced a significant operational setback, resulting in flights departing from Dubai with no passengers on board.

This disruption reportedly stemmed from non-payment of fees to various partners, which led airport officials to deny check-in for travelers. The airline’s financial troubles have led to multiple issues, including this latest incident where SpiceJet had to operate several empty flights.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has responded by placing SpiceJet under enhanced surveillance, effective immediately. This increased oversight includes more frequent spot checks and night-time audits aimed at ensuring the airline’s operational safety.

According to reports, this incident was the second such disruption this month. SpiceJet’s spokesperson attributed the cancellations to “operational issues” and assured that affected passengers were either accommodated on later flights, booked with other airlines, or given full refunds. The airline has since resumed its normal flight operations from Dubai.

Financially, SpiceJet is struggling, with a 20% decline in consolidated net profit to Rs 158 crore for the first quarter ending June 2024, compared to Rs 198 crore during the same period last year. Additionally, revenue from operations fell 15% year-on-year to Rs 1,708 crore, down from Rs 2,003 crore in the previous year.

Despite these challenges, SpiceJet has reported that all scheduled flights from Dubai are now operating as planned, but the financial strain and operational difficulties continue to impact the airline’s performance.
