Victims’ Families Call for $24 Billion Fine Against Boeing Over 737 MAX Crashes

Why the Boeing Team Has Arrived in Pakistan

Families who lost loved ones in the Boeing 737 MAX crashes have called on the Justice Department to impose a $24 billion fine on the company, labeling it “the deadliest corporate crime in U.S. history.

In a letter to the DOJ, they demand Boeing face criminal prosecution, highlighting the tragic loss of 346 lives in the Lion Air and Ethiopian Air disasters.

The DOJ initially charged Boeing with conspiracy to defraud the U.S. in 2021, resulting in a $2.5 billion fine under a deferred prosecution agreement. However, recent incidents, such as the Alaska Airlines door plug incident, prompted the DOJ to reconsider, alleging Boeing violated the terms of the agreement.

Attorney Paul Cassell, representing some victims’ families, argues that given the severity of Boeing’s actions, the maximum fine is justified. He suggests that a portion of the fine could be suspended if funds are redirected towards enhancing quality control and safety measures.

Cassell also insists on criminal prosecutions of former Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg and other executives involved at the time of the crashes.

These demands come amidst ongoing Senate scrutiny, where Boeing’s current CEO, Dave Calhoun, faced questioning regarding safety concerns and whistleblower allegations. The families’ plea underscores their quest for accountability and justice, urging swift and decisive action from the DOJ in response to Boeing’s role in the tragic 737 MAX incidents.
