SpiceJet is Back with Big Plans: Widebody Expansion for Long-Haul Flights

SpiceJet, one of India’s leading budget airlines, is making a determined comeback after facing financial turbulence in recent years.

As the carrier works towards stabilizing its operations, it is setting ambitious expansion goals, including the possibility of entering the long-haul market with wide-body aircraft.

Exploring Long-Haul Operations

With India’s aviation sector booming and passenger demand rising, SpiceJet is considering expanding beyond its traditional short-haul routes. Speaking at the Aviation Festival Asia 2025 in Singapore, SpiceJet CEO Ajay Singh confirmed that the airline is evaluating options for long-haul flights.

Singh highlighted that SpiceJet gained valuable experience in wide-body operations during the pandemic when it wet-leased Airbus A330 aircraft for repatriation and charter flights.

However, he noted that specific decisions regarding aircraft selection and routes are still under discussion, as the airline prioritizes operational stability.

Fleet Revival and Growth Plans

SpiceJet’s long-haul ambitions align with its ongoing efforts to restore its fleet. In January 2025, the airline began reintroducing its Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, which had been grounded for several months in 2024 due to maintenance and engineering challenges related to the CFM LEAP-1B engines.

Singh described the return of these aircraft as a “major milestone” in the airline’s recovery. By mid-April 2025, SpiceJet aims to have ten grounded aircraft back in service, including three Boeing 737 MAX planes. This move is expected to enhance the airline’s capacity and support its growth strategy.

Reviving Seaplane Services in 2025

In addition to expanding its network, SpiceJet is also reviving its seaplane services. The airline has secured rights to operate on 20 seaplane routes, connecting scenic and remote destinations such as Lakshadweep, Hyderabad, Guwahati, and Shillong. These services will commence once the necessary infrastructure is in place, offering passengers a unique travel option.
