The victim, a Singaporean jeweler returning from trade fairs in Bangkok and Hong Kong, had unknowingly become a target while storing his cash in an overhead compartment. The perpetrator, identified as Peng Hui, a 54-year-old Chinese national, took advantage of the unsecured bag left by the victim and made off with a substantial sum in various currencies.

Peng Hui pleaded guilty to theft and other charges.

Upon landing, authorities swiftly apprehended Peng Hui for his involvement in the theft. He faced multiple charges, including theft itself and failing to declare cash exceeding legal limits upon entry into Singapore. Furthermore, investigations revealed that Peng Hui had converted some of the stolen cash into casino chips and attempted to remit money overseas.
