Biden Allocates Nearly $1 Billion to Modernize US Airport Terminals

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative as part of President Biden’s Bipartisan Investing in America agenda. With an infusion of $970 million, earmarked for 114 airports across 44 states and three territories, this announcement signals a resolute commitment to revitalizing the nation’s infrastructure. Secretary Buttigieg, at the forefront of the Administration’s Investing in America tour, will spearhead the dissemination of this transformative funding.

This substantial investment is poised to address the burgeoning demand for air travel while ushering in a new era of passenger experience, accessibility, and sustainability. Central to the initiative is the creation of jobs that offer competitive wages, a cornerstone of President Biden’s agenda.

The allocated funds will facilitate a myriad of projects aimed at enhancing the passenger journey. These include the implementation of state-of-the-art baggage systems, the expansion of security checkpoints, the augmentation of gate capacity, and the modernization of aging infrastructure within terminals and ground transportation networks. Notably, these investments also prioritize sustainability efforts and strive to improve accessibility for individuals with disabilities.

Nine grants are earmarked to revitalize aging air traffic control towers, bolstering critical components of the aviation ecosystem. The funding, sourced from the Airport Terminal Program—a pivotal component of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law—supplements the recent injection of over $240 million in Airport Infrastructure Grants. With the law allocating $1 billion annually for five years to Airport Terminal Program grants, it signifies a monumental step towards the modernization of the nation’s airport infrastructure.

Beyond the realm of airports, the law encompasses a comprehensive strategy to refurbish roads, bridges, rails, public transit systems, ports, and airports, thereby laying the groundwork for sustained economic growth and prosperity.

To date, the Administration has unveiled over $415 billion in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding for more than 46,000 infrastructure projects nationwide. Additionally, the mobilization of over $640 billion in private sector manufacturing and clean energy investments underscores a collective commitment to fortifying America’s position on the global stage.
