Over 25,000 Job Seekers Flock Air India Office in Mumbai for Just 2,216 Job Openings

In a dramatic scene that unfolded in Mumbai’s Kalina area on Tuesday, over 25,000 job seekers converged for a walk-in interview at Air India Airport Services Ltd.

The company had advertised 2,216 vacancies for handyman positions, which involve various repair and maintenance duties, but the overwhelming turnout led to chaotic scenes reminiscent of a stampede.

The massive influx of applicants quickly overwhelmed the recruitment office. The scene was described as chaotic, with long lines of hopefuls stretching far beyond the premises. The situation spiraled out of control as thousands jostled for a chance at securing one of the coveted positions.

George Abram, the general secretary of the Aviation Industry Employees Guild, criticized the recruitment process as “mismanaged.” According to a report by India Today, the sheer volume of candidates made it impossible for the recruiters to conduct the planned interviews.

In an attempt to restore order, Air India administrative officials decided to change the approach. Candidates were instructed to submit their resumes and leave, abandoning the initial plan for in-person interviews. This move aimed to manage the crowd and prevent further disorder.

Despite the chaos and the abrupt change in the recruitment process, Air India has assured the applicants that all submitted CVs will be reviewed. The company has promised to contact eligible candidates for the next steps in the hiring process, offering a glimmer of hope to the thousands who turned up in search of employment.
