Riyadh Air Completes First Certification Flight, Eyes Full Operational Launch

Riyadh Air (RX), a promising new player in the aviation sector and a subsidiary of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, has marked a significant milestone in its journey to becoming a fully certified airline.

On September 12, the airline executed its inaugural non-commercial flight, RX5001, showcasing a crucial step toward obtaining its Air Operator Certificate.

The historic flight took off from King Khalid International Airport (RUH) in Riyadh and touched down at King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED) in Jeddah, demonstrating Riyadh Air’s readiness for the next phases of its certification process.

This flight is a key component of the airline’s certification flying program, designed to meet the rigorous standards set by the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA).

In a press release, Riyadh Air expressed its appreciation for the support received from several key partners. GACA’s regulatory oversight has been pivotal, while Saudia Airlines played a crucial role by leasing the Boeing 787-9 aircraft used for this flight.

Riyadh Airports Co. provided essential logistical support, Saudia Technic ensured the aircraft’s maintenance, and Alsalam Aerospace Industries Co. contributed by offering hangar facilities.

Riyadh Air is gearing up for its full-scale commercial operations, scheduled to commence in 2025. Over the coming months, the airline will conduct additional domestic and international flights as part of its ongoing certification efforts.

This inaugural flight marks an exciting leap forward in Riyadh Air’s journey, setting the stage for its official launch and the expansion of its global partnerships.
