Teen Pilot’s Solo Journey: Flying Across Seven Continents to Raise Fund for Cancer Research
Ethan Guo, a determined 19-year-old pilot, is on an extraordinary mission to fly solo across all seven continents to raise $1 million for childhood cancer research. His journey began in May from Memphis, Tennessee, driven by a personal connection to the cause.
Guo’s cousin, who was diagnosed with Stage-4 Hodgkin’s lymphoma, inspired him to take on this ambitious challenge.
Guo, who celebrated his 19th birthday in July 2024, is aiming to become the youngest person to complete a solo flight across all seven continents. He is navigating his way around the globe in a 50-year-old Cessna 182, planning to cover approximately 80,000 kilometers (50,000 miles) over 100 days.
The teen pilot’s passion for flying started at the age of 13, and he earned his private pilot’s license by 17. His inspiration for this global flight came from learning that the youngest pilot to circumnavigate the world was 19, which motivated him to set a new record.
Guo’s mission is not just about achieving a personal goal but also about raising awareness and funds for cancer research at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis. As of September 11, 2024, he has already raised $37,870.
“Seeing how cancer affected my loved ones, including my grandparents and aunts, I wanted to make a difference,” Guo shared. His journey represents a blend of personal determination and a heartfelt drive to help others facing similar battles.
