US Woman Bakes Bread on Flight: This Is an Airplane, Not a Bakery

A U.S. baking influencer has stirred controversy after she baked bread during a flight to Spain, drawing both admiration and criticism online.

Maria Baradell, known for her baking tutorials, took to Instagram with a video showcasing her attempt to make a sourdough loaf from scratch while in the air. The footage, filmed on August 18 and posted on August 22, quickly went viral, amassing 1.9 million views and igniting a heated debate among social media users.

In the video, Baradell is seen mixing flour, water, and a sourdough starter in a collapsible bowl, and then stretching and folding the dough. She explained her reasoning, saying, “Sourdough bread-making takes time, so I figured a long trip like this would be perfect for it.” To ensure cleanliness in the confined and often poorly sanitized airplane environment, she used hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes throughout the process.

Baradell also detailed how she managed to bring the ingredients through airport security. “TSA inspected my bag in Dallas since I had flour in it (which of course can look suspicious). The flour, salt, and sourdough starter passed the TSA tests. A lot of people are wondering how I got past security with these items, but they are allowed, and a lot of people in the sourdough community travel with their starters. We like to make bread wherever we go.”

The video has not been without its critics. Some flight attendants and passengers expressed frustration, calling the act inconsiderate and disruptive. One commenter noted, “This is inconsiderate for all the people on the plane allergic to wheat and/or gluten. If I was sat next to you, I would ask for a new seat immediately and a full refund because it would make me sick for several weeks to just inhale the flour. Please be more considerate next time.”

On the other hand, there were also supportive comments praising Baradell for her ingenuity. “Girl, I can’t even read on a flight…. You’re up there making bread,” one user wrote. Another commented, “As someone who gets super nervous flying, if I saw you doing this next to me, I would instantly feel relaxed.”

In response to the backlash, Baradell issued an apology in a follow-up video, stating that she would not attempt such a feat again.
