Qantas CEO Alan Joyce Makes retirement two months Early

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce Makes two months Early Exit

Alan Joyce, CEO of Qantas Group, has informed Board that he will bring forward his retirement by two months to help the company accelerate its renewal. As a result, CEO Designate Vanessa Hudson will assume the role of Managing Director and Group CEO effective 6 September 2023.

According to Alan Joyce, recent attention to Qantas and historical events have made it evident that the corporation needs to prioritize its renewal. The wisest course of action for me in these circumstances is to retire earlier than planned and give over management to Vanessa and the new staff now, knowing they will do a fantastic job.

“I have spent the past 22 years with Qantas, including the last 15 as CEO, and there is much of which I am proud. There have been a lot of ups and downs, and there is obviously still a lot of work to be done, particularly to ensure that we always deliver for our clients. But I depart knowing that the business has a solid foundation and a promising future,” Mr. Joyce added.

Richard Goyder, chairman of Qantas, said: “Today demonstrates how Alan has consistently put Qantas’ best interests first. We warmly appreciate him on behalf of the Board for his leadership during some really difficult times and for planning ahead for opportunities like ultra-long-haul travel.

“This changeover occurs at a time when Qantas and its employees undoubtedly face difficulties. The Board is concentrating on this issue, and Vanessa’s leadership will guide the management team in regaining the public’s trust in the kind of firm we are, according to Mr. Goyder.

In line with the schedule, at Qantas’ annual general meeting in November, shareholders will formally approve the appointment of Vanessa Hudson as managing director.
