A consumer court has ordered the German airline Lufthansa to pay the mother and child an additional Rs 25,000 in compensation for being denied boarding on an Athens-bound aircraft, in addition to paying a total of Rs 4.5 lakh in airfare reimbursement.

A woman called Kyriaki Petriti and her son arrived at the airport in Bengaluru to take a Lufthansa flight to Athens through Frankfurt in an incident that happened in October 2021.

Despite holding a valid passport and paying Rs 3.26 lakh for business class tickets, the child was refused boarding because he was not permitted to transit via Germany. The mother and her son were compelled to board another flight to Athens as a result. The mother paid Rs. 4.49 lakh for her Emirates tickets, which she used to travel to Athens through Dubai.

Later, they made the decision to file a lawsuit against Lufthansa in a Bengaluru court, which resulted in the airline being required to pay damages. In July 2023, the court announced its decision and ordered the airline to repay the Rs 3.26 lakh ticket price and pay an additional Rs 1.22 lakh for the expense of flying Emirates from Bengaluru.

The court subsequently ordered the airline to pay Rs 15,000 more as additional service deficiency for the youngster, Rs 10,000 more as compensation for the parents’ suffering, and an additional Rs 2,000 as court costs. To pay the money, Lufthansa had 45 days.
